Hola and welcome to my site dedicated to the rarest creature on earth - me, Lonesome George!
Being the last of my species, I know better than anyone how lonely life can be...

_ I
was found by a Hungarian scientist, József Vágvölgyi and his wife on
Pinta island – alone. Finding
me was undoubtedly a shock to him as he was actually on Pinta to study
endemic snails, and Pinta tortoises were thought to be long extinct. Not
long after in March 1972, I was brought to Santa Cruz island and the staff of the
Galapagos
National Park and the Charles Darwin Foundation have taken care of me
ever
since. My celebrity status has continued
to grow – I have frequently shared column inches in the press with all sorts of
other famous human Georges – Clooney, Harrison, Michael… the list goes on!
The focus of my plight, as you probably know, is my search for love. Over the years, the staff have introduced me to many like-minded, lovely females including Isabela tortoises, Espanola tortoises and also a young Swiss graduate named Sveva Grigioni (learn more about my friends here). Unfortunately, the spark has never been quite right and I remain a bachelor with no female companion with which to start my much anticipated family. It may very well be too late for me to find a mate although a spark of hope remains. That’s why this February, I am appealing for LOVE – love for me and love for Galapagos. Your gift may help me to finally find a suitable mate and will certainly support the relentless work taking place on the Islands to ensure that no other species suffer my lonely fate. Please explore this website to see how you can get involved and help the Galapagos Conservation Trust continue the work to protect and conserve my wonderful home. Thank you and with love, Lonesome George x |
